SAS Introduces LABRats Science Mentoring Program

Thursday, March 11th, 2004

In an effort to bolster science education in the United States, the Society for Amateur Scientists (SAS) has begun a national initiative called LABRats that brings scientists and engineers together with students.

Organized like scouting groups, the initiative is strongly focussed on bringing girls and minority students, 6th through 12th grade, to an interest in science. In addition to science, the SAS says, “LABRats would teach good citizenship and help young people to live rewarding lives by directing each member’s interest in science towards developing their self-esteem, building their character, and instilling a strong commitment to community service.”
