A Quest for Books from Childhood

Bishop Fish Monster

Woodcut from one of those childhood monster books.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere in my blog, I spent a lot of time in the library as kid. I devoured all kinds of non-fiction: books about dinosaurs, books about science in general, books about crafts, and books about monsters (anything about Nessie, bigfoot, and my gang’s favorite, Werewolves and Other Monsters by Thomas Aylesworth). There are a few books that I only dimly remember and that I’d dearly love to find again, but I have no idea where to start. Google has been less than helpful, except for one. If only I had been obsessed enough as a kid to create a bibliography of my favorite volumes.

Fall/Winter Reading: Ringworld Series

Thursday, September 23rd, 2004

CNN has a glowing review of Larry Niven’s new “Ringworld’s Children” and that reminded me that I need to do some good old-fashioned reading. Quite some time ago, so long that I’ve all but forgotten it, I read “Ringworld,” but I haven’t read any of the following novels. So off I go to buy a new copy of “Ringworld” and will follow up with the others: “Ringworld Engineers,” “Ringworld Throne” and finally “Ringworld‘s Children.”

Or I could get the first title in audiobook format from iTunes. Or I could get it directly from Audible.com for $9.95, since it would be my first purchase from them.

That reminds me — what ever happened to the SciFi Channel production of “Riverworld?” I guess I missed it completely — it even was nominated for a Saturn Award. Well, I guess there are some reasons that should make me reconsider getting cable.

Anita Baker My Everything album cover

Courtesy iTunes.

In between Hurricane Frances updates as she drowned south Georgia last night, I saw Anita Baker on the Tonight Show. Nobody told me that she had a new album! Oh, well, I just downloaded it from iTunes. Get your’s now!

Update 8 September: I’ve been listening all day to the new album. It is classic Anita Baker — she may have been gone for 10 years, but her voice is as amazing as ever. I didn’t realize how much I missed her music.

Go to CNN for an article about her return to the recording industry.
